Called "Zhu" for short, Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou Province which serves as the political, economical and cultural center of the province. It covers an area of 8,034 sq. kilometers with a population of approximately 3 million.. The minority nationalities living in the province include Bu, Miao and Hui people, all of which almost accounts for 13% of the total population. Guiyang City takes jurisdiction over 5 prefectures, 3 counties and the city itself.

Guiyang has a long history. In 1941, Guiyang city was officially proclaimed to be the municipality. Prior to that, Guiyang was only a county in the Han Dynasty, called Shunyuan Town in the Yuan Dynasty, Guiyang County in the Ming Dynasty respectively. It was renamed Guiyang County in 1913.
Guiyang City is situated in the center of Guizhou Province, 1,071 meters above sea level and is surrounded by mountains. It has a subtropical warm, moist climate which is warm in winter and cool in summer with an average annual temperature of 15.3?.

With beautiful mountains and various minority customs, Guiyang has many places of historical interests and natural beauty. The most famous sites are: Jiaxiu Pavilion, Qianling Park, Huaxi Park, Forest Park, Baihua Lake, Hongfeng (Red Maple Lake) and Tianhetan (the Milky Way Pool).
