It is also the switch center of eastern China
air traffic. A multi-level,multi-function air service in Shanghai has
been formed enabling the landing of more than 250 flights everyday. In
1995, the yearly passenger volume in Shanghai reached 11 million, and
a steady 11% increase has been realized in each of the successive years.
At present, Shanghai has flights to international cities including Bangkok,
Brussels, Frankfurt, Fukuoka, Fukushima, Hiroshima, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur,
Los Angeles, Macau, Madrid, Melbourne, Munich, Nagasaki, Nagoya, Niigata,
Osaka, Paris, San Francisco, Sendai, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and Vancouver.
Flights from Shanghai are also avaiable to every city in China. Worth
to mention is the the Shanghai Pudong Airport ( PVC ).
Construction of the first phase started in
1996, with a total investment of twelve billion yuan RMB to build a 4000-meter-long
main runway and a terminal with a 200, 000-250, 000 square-meter gross
floor area. Put into operation right before the turn of the century, the
airport has so far an annual handling capacity of 20 million passengers
and 500, 000 tons of cargo. The ultimate plan is to have four runways,
with a total handling capacity of 70 million passengers per year.
