Hot pots are another great meal. Hot pots are made with large varieties of meat, vegetables, tofu, and other unique foods which are dropped into a boiling pot of soup until done. One of the favorite places of the local community is Lian Hua Xiao Qu. However, if you intend on trying this restaurant on the weekend, you should plan to arrive before 5:00 p.m. because it is usually extremely busy between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. It is an all-you-can-eat-and-drink establishment, and people gather here and stay for hours. The cost is about US$4 per person.

Xinjiang food is something not to be missed. Generally Muslim style with a Chinese touch, the standard meat is mutton. Restaurants that serve this type of food generally have Arabic writing on the sign at the entrance!

Almost everywhere in Kunming you can see stalls where dough flies through the air into a boiling pot. Dao Xiao Mian (knife-shaved noodles) is the name of this typical food. The shaved noodles are the basis of a soup to which are added meat and vegetables.
