 Zen
Restaurant is in the basement of Pacific Place and steps from the
MTR Admiralty Station. Some consider it to be by far the best dim sum
restaurant in Hong Kong. However, dim sum is served only on weekends.
In order to get a seat, book a day in advance. The price is more expensive
than that of most dim sum restaurants, but the quality of the food and
service more than make up for the price. Dress is casual.
Wu
Kong Restaurant is on Peking Road, steps away from Nathan Road. It
would be hard to miss the large green neon sign. This is a Shanghainese
restaurant, located in the basement of the building. It is not a very
new restaurant, but the food is excellent. An alternative to plain steamed
rice is steamed rice mixed with bok choy.
Peking
Garden Restaurant is noted for Peking duck! Order the duck along with
some other dishes. A chef will come to your table, let you inspect the
roasted duck, and then will cut it up in small portions. One way to eat
this is to wrap some slices of meat and a piece of cucumber with the thin
slice of dough. This dish is guaranteed to be filling; an order of steamed
rice is not a necessary accompaniment. At around 9 or 10 p.m., one of
the chefs will show you how to make noodles from dough by hand. Dress
is casual. Make reservations beforehand.
Mad
Dogs Pub: There are branches on Hong Kong Island (10 minutes from
the Star Ferry Terminal) and in Tsim Sha Tsui. If you need a culinary
escape from weeks of challenging Chinese food, then Mad Dogs Pub is a
great place to get good Western food (toasted avocado, Brie sandwiches,
etc.) and good English beer. However, the prices are rather high. During
happy hour (between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.), beer is half price.
