Sights & Attractions --- Zhaojun's Tomb

Lying 9 km to the south of the city, Zhaojun's tomb is a tomb tumulus with rammed clay 33 meters high. It occupies an area of 3.3 ha and is one of the remains for posterity to commemorate Wang Zhaojun, the lady of honor of the Han Dynasty, from 51-53 BC.

The leader of the Huns Nationality, Chanyu, went to Chang'an (the capital at that time, presently Xi'an) three times to ask to marry one of the princesses of the Han Dynasty. Emperor Yuan, ruler of the Han Dynasty at that time, married Wang Zhaojun to Chanyu in order to keep peace in the border area. After the marriage, Zhaojun made great contributions to the unity of Han and Huns.

The story of Zhaojun's going beyond the Great Walls has since spread among the people. Zhaojun's tomb, a symbol of national unity, has become one of the eight historical scenic spots in Hohhot. In front of the tomb, are tablets with inscriptions and antique exhibition rooms. In the summer time, it is lush and green here. Hence, it is also crowned as "A Tomb Covered with Green".
