In the recent years, the post and telecommunication
has grown rapidly in Guangzhou. Yearly income in the field of post and
telecommunication reached 7 billion US dollars (70.98 billion yuan) in
1997 and has been increasing at the ratio of 22.7% steadily every since
then. On 8th June 1996, Guangzhou successfully installed eight digit phone
system becoming the third city in China after Beijing and Shanghai to
make advantage of eight digit phone numbers.
Ever since then, the resources of the phone
numbers increased 10 times. Phone exchange capacity in Guangzhou at the
beginning of year 2000 reached around 3 million while the telephone installation
number topped 3 million including 2.5 million as inner city phones making
Guangzhou the number one city in China in the same field. There are over
250 thousand public phone stalls with over 300 thousand phone sets. Mobile
phone number increases steadily at 38% every year and reached at the end
of year 1999 the number of 1.2 million while Pager number increased to
2.2 million at the same time.
At present, there has been opened over 150
thousand lines used for long distance calls, within which 6 thousand lines
designed for international cities, Hong Kong and Macau. Regarding Internet
information service, there are more than 50 ISPs connecting Guangzhou
to the world. By 2010 as shown on the government schedule, high speed
internet service will be available to every private home for conveniences
in every respect.
